DON’T Microwave Your Chex Mix!

Published by nickel at 9:02 pm under Just Plain Talk Edit This

My cooking tip of the day would be, don’t microwave your trail mix!

The Husband decided that he wanted some trail mix or Chex Mix as you might call it. So we bought some Corn Chex and nuts and pretzels. We thought we had Cheerios at home but we didn’t so too bad. This is just going to be a three-ingredient trail mix.

I discovered that the Chex had a new recipe on the back of the box telling me how to cook this in the microwave and it would only take 15 minutes instead of the 2 hours that it takes the old way in the real oven. So I thought, why not, let’s give it a try!

So I mixed up the Chex and stuff and melted the butter and added the garlic and onion powders and Worchestershire sauce and poured all that over the Chex and stuff. I stirred it just like the recipe on the box said to do but it was way too large for the biggest bowl I could find so I divided it up and proceeded to cook it in the microwave per instructions. You cook it on high for two minutes, then stir. OK, it was doing pretty good. Two more minutes and stir again. But after this second two minutes, when I opened up the microwave, smoke came out (not gushing but rather a little spiral–but still) and part of the Chex and stuff was actually black! Well, OK, I’ve learned how to do this now so I put in the second batch and did it for ONE minute and stirred and it was fine. One more minute, open it up to stir and at first it looked OK till I moved some of the pieces and there was smoke underneath filtering through to the top! And as I stirred I found that there were even more charred remains in the bottom than in the first batch I’d done.

Well, The Husband, good sport and lover of burnt popcorn that he is, ate some of it anyway and said it was OK.

BUT, I don’t think I’ll do it this way again. Back to the old oven and roasting pan for me. There are just some things that aren’t the same in the microwave!
